The risk of audit is determined by each local CMS carrier's data. Any decision to audit is based on the MACs/RACs which use that localized data to assess overutilization based on that local carrier's data. There can be a wide variance between local and national numbers. Using the national distributions may give you a false sense of security if your local utilization numbers fall far below the national numbers. The Riskometer uses MedAxiom data, which is extremely consistent with the CMS national averages. The Riskometer is solely designed to show you where you stand in comparison to others in MedAxiom and can be used as a self-examination tool to investigate your documentation to either support or refute your E&M coding levels. MedAxiom makes no claims, warranties, or representations that the Riskometer indicates the likelihood of an audit or your ability to pass an audit.
